3D films for download - is that possible?
There are more and more 3D films to be seen in the cinema and on Blu-ray. We'll tell you how to download them.
The anaglyph 3D process
The most widespread are currently 3D videos using the anaglyph method. Virtually all video formats are able to reproduce this technology and have the third dimension elicited with red-green or red-cyan glasses.
- Anaglyph 3D files can be viewed on popular video portals such as Youtube and Dailymotion.
- To find all 3D films on YouTube, simply enter the abbreviation "yt3d: enable = true" in the search field.
- There is free Anaglyph 3D glasses available for download as a PDF template from CHIP. With the free Anaglyph Maker you can convert your own photos to 3D images, with the Free 3D Video Maker you can also convert videos.
Shuttering and polarization 3D
Most 3D films in cinemas use polarization technology. Many televisions and Blu-ray players can also use Shuttering to play a film in 3D. The best-known streaming portals do not currently offer this technology. However, there are two ways to download 3D movies.
- Downloads of entire Blu-ray Discs can be played in 3D after burning on BluRay blanks. Some hardware or software players are also able to play stream files. Then you can save yourself the burning.
- MKV or MK3D files can in principle be 3D-capable. They contain two videos and metadata about the correct overlay. However, most software media players cannot play the two videos on top of each other, i.e. make a 3D video out of them.
Even if the technology is already very far, 3D films have so far hardly been available for download, as no format has yet emerged as the standard. Therefore, the current fee-based film streaming and download portals currently hardly offer 3D films.
