3D: what is it?
The term 3D is often used, especially in films. In this practical tip you will find out what that actually is and where else you come across 3D.
What does 3D mean?
- 3D stands for three dimensions or three-dimensional. Our daily life takes place in 3D.
- The three dimensions are length, width and depth or x, y and z. With a coordinate system and a triplet of numbers (x, y, z) you can clearly characterize every point in space.
Where is 3D used?
- We perceive the world in 3D with our eyes. Not only can you distinguish in one level whether an object is to the left of another, but you can also specify how far behind it is. The latter information is called depth.
- Many films are now broadcast in 3D. In order to see the 3D effect, certain 3D glasses are usually necessary. Many are based on polarization filters, which can be used to precisely control which image reaches which eye. This creates the 3D effect for you.
- Computer games are also often available in a 3D look. Here the developers try to create a 3D effect by using shading and the right perspectives.
- With VR glasses like the Oculus Rift you should soon be able to immerse yourself in a new three-dimensional world. In addition to the gaming area, there are countless possibilities that will only emerge in the future.
