1. If you want Google, you get it - even if you make a mistake
An "o" too much or too little and you still end up on Google:
- If you make a mistake in the address line, this is not a problem with Google. The company has also secured the domains "Gooogle.com", "Gogle.com", "Googlr.com" and many more and automatically guides you to the correct Google page.
- Curious: The domain "www.466453.com" also belongs to Google. This is the number combination for "google" by entering the number for mobile phones without a full keyboard. This was the first time in Germany in 1999 with the Nokia 3210, the first cell phone without an antenna.
2. What does a Tyrannosaurus Rex do in Google in the garden?
The "Googleplex" is the headquarters of Google Inc. in California and with almost 288, 000 square meters the largest building of search engine giants. This corresponds to an area of more than 40 soccer fields. And there is a lot to discover on the huge site:
- When the Google employees take a seat outside, they come across a replica of a Tyrannosaurus Rex called "Stan". According to Google, the T-Rex should be a reminder to the company and warn of extinction.
- Alternatively, employees can also spend their lunch break in the in-house pool or with a free massage.
- Google has rented 200 goats (including shepherds and border collies) around the company headquarters to mow or eat the lawn. "Goats are much sweeter than lawnmowers, " argues Google. Or maybe the CEOs just played goat simulator for too long.
- In addition to a dinosaur and goats, there are a few other curious residents: pink flamingos, a spaceship, phone boxes in Google colors, human-sized balls and Android characters.
There is another special feature in the Google district in Zurich: the employees there have their own chute, which transports them directly to the canteen.
3. Google Doodle as a vacation note
Google Doodles take up highlights, moving moments and anniversaries of outstanding personalities. The first Google Doodle was none of this, however, but an absence note:
- Google bosses can also celebrate: In 1998, Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page visited the hippie festival "Burning Man" in Nevada and left a changed Google lettering on the homepage.
- You could see the logo of "Burning Man" and should say something like: In the event of a server crash, we can not fix anything - we celebrate at the festival.
4. Why "Google"?
How the name "Google" came about is not entirely clear. There are two theories:
- Investors are said to have written the wrong name "Google" on a check instead of the original name "Googol". Since then, the company has been called "Google".
- A fellow student had spelled the actual name incorrectly when looking for an available company name.
5. The Google story started in university
The story of Google begins at Stanford University:
- Initially, it was only a scientific project called "BackRup". The aim was to find and sort information using backlinks. This core idea has remained until today.
- The first "server" can still be seen at Stanford University today: a cover made of colorful Lego blocks covers the ten 4 GB hard drives.
6. Google discovers Twitter
Google's first tweet caused a lot of confusion:
- In February 2009, Google tweeted "I'm 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01110101 01100011 01101011 01111001 00001010".
- Are you a math genius or a computer scientist, you must have recognized and decoded the binary code.
- For everyone else: The tweet translates to "I'm happy" (Original: "I'm feeling lucky").
7. Google is more the dog type
- Google is a real dog lover and expressly allows the employees in the Google Code of Conduct to bring the dog to work.
- And cats? There is also something in the code of conduct: Google may also like cats, but because of the "dog policy" they have to stay at home. "We are a dog company, " writes Google.
