Abbreviation ff - that means the short form
The abbreviation "ff." know many students from various, mostly older scientific publications. This short form is also common in the legal language. In this practical tip, we explain what "ff." stands and what you have to pay attention to when using it.
ff. - Short for "followers"?
Ff. Does not actually stand for those who follow, that has developed over the years. There was a reinterpretation. The ff. Stands for the plural of the abbreviation f., For "following".
- Just like pp. the plural for "pages", or Jgg. the plural for "vintages".
- The repetition of the last letter of the abbreviation indicates its plural.
- f. stands for folio - "on the next page". ff. stands for "on the next pages".
- It is therefore not entirely wrong that the wrong donkey bridge ff. Stands for "successive".
ff. - this is how the abbreviation is used
Regardless of definitions and origins, there are more or less clear rules for using f. and ff.
- "Page 27 f." means exactly pages 27 and 28.
- "Page 27 ff." says page 27 and others. This means at least pages 27, 28 and 29. However, others can also be included.
- Nowadays such abbreviations are discouraged in scientific work.
- Instead of "See p. 27 ff." it is recommended to enter the page numbers correctly: "See p. 27-33".
