End credits: That means the abbreviations
When you look at the end credits of a film, some abbreviations catch your eye. In this practical tip, we explain what they mean.
The most famous acronyms from the credits
Most of the abbreviations that you will find in the film credits refer to associations that are related to the film industry. The following can be seen particularly often on large screens:
- ACE stands for American Cinema Editors. If you want to count yourself among the approximately 600 members, you have to work in the film sector for at least 5 years. In addition to high-quality work, good contacts are also important because two existing members have to make a recommendation for the new entry.
- ASC refers to the American Society of Cinematographers. It is an association for cinematographers and there is even an award ceremony for the best work.
- In addition to the Americans, the British also have an association for outstanding cameramen. The British Society of Cinematographers therefore has the abbreviation BSC .
- In Germany there is the BVK - the professional association for cinematography. However, this is not an association for impressive performance in the film industry, but an association that works for the working conditions of camera operators.
- The abbreviation CSA, which stands for Casting Society of America, is also frequently read in the cinema credits. The casting director selects the actors for the film role.
Member of an association: an outstanding achievement
If such an abbreviation can be read behind a name, this indicates that it is an expert in the film industry. To be a member of an association that appears in the credits of a film is evidence of outstanding work, since not everyone is easily accepted.
