Adobe Reader: Turn off annoying update messages
If you feel annoyed by the constant updates from Adobe Reader, you can switch them off. We'll show you how it's done.
Disable update notifications in Adobe Reader
In the current version 10 of Adobe Reader you can unfortunately not switch off the update messages directly in the program. However, you can deactivate the responsible service with Windows board means. It has the same effect.
- Press the "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously.
- Enter "msconfig" in the input field and click "OK". Confirm the possible security question by clicking on the "Yes" button.
- You are now in the system configuration. Go to the "Services" tab above and you will see all programs and services that start with Windows.
- Click on "Manufacturer" above the table, should the service responsible for the update be at the top. In the current version 10 this is called "Adobe Acrobat Update Service" (see picture).
- Remove the checkmark in front of the entry and click on "OK". After a restart, the updater is deactivated.
- If you update the program again later, the service may be reactivated. Then you have to repeat the steps.
The practical tip relates to Adobe Reader X 10.1.8.
