AirDrop - what is it?
Since iOS 7, Apple's AirDrop service has also been available on mobile devices. However, many users wonder what exactly that is. We clarify it.
Apple's AirDrop can do that
AirDrop first appeared on Mac OS 10.7 "Lion". As of iOS 7, the service is also available on Apple mobile devices:
- Function: With AirDrop you can exchange data such as pictures or Word documents between your Apple devices. Mac, MacBook, iPhone and iPod touch can exchange all kinds of files with each other. The connection is made via Bluetooth and WLAN. It's quick and costs nothing.
- Prerequisite: AirDrop is only supported by certain devices. OS-X devices: MacBook and MacBook Pro from year of construction 2008, MacBook Air from 2010, iMac from 2009 and Mac mini and Mac pro from 2010. iOS devices: from iPhone 5, iPad from 4th generation, iPad mini and iPod 5th generation touch.
- Procedure: The service uses Bluetooth to identify a device with the AirDrop function switched on. In a public WLAN, the number of possible hits would simply be too high. In order to transfer data afterwards, however, WLAN is used for the faster connection.
- Share data: Under OS X you can share any files. To do this, you have to connect to the desired person under "AirDrop" in the Finder on the left and then place the files in the folder. As of iOS 7, you can share the content that can also be sent by email, for example, pictures or links to websites. To do this, click on the Share button and select the AirDrop option.
Use AirDrop on iPhone under iOS 10
To use AirDrop on Apple mobile devices, you not only need at least iOS 7 and a compatible device, but also an iCloud account. Also turn on the WiFi connection and Bluetooth:
- Place your finger on the lower edge of the display and pull it upwards so that the Control Center opens.
- Tap AirDrop below and choose one of the three options. You can activate or deactivate the service via "Everyone" or "Receive from". You can also use the "Contacts only" option to limit the circle of action partners.
- If you have activated AirDrop, tap "Send" or the share button within an app such as Safari, Photos, Contacts or Passbook. This consists of an arrow in a square.
- Your device will then search for available devices with AirDrop in the area. If a Mac or iOS device is available, you can select it above.
- The other user receives a notification of which data you want to transfer. He can reject or accept it. Once the file has been transferred, it is automatically opened on the other device.
