Extending the iPhone's battery life: the best tips
In order to significantly increase the battery life of your iPhone, a few changes to the settings of the device often help. The biggest power guzzlers on the iPhone are the display, constant online pressure from push services and unused wireless connections such as WLAN or Bluetooth. We have listed how you can disable most of the runtime killers and save the iPhone's energy.
Extend runtime: The largest battery consumer - the iPhone display
Apple uses high-resolution, bright screens in its devices. But the brighter the screen, the more the battery life usually suffers. In the settings of the iPhone you will find ways to save the battery under "Display and brightness". Here you have the choice:
- Auto brightness: If you activate this switch, the brightness of the iPhone display adapts to the environment. This saves energy in closed rooms and in the dark, but the constant checking itself also shortens the battery life. Although this is hardly noticeable in everyday life, it can ultimately result in a few seconds of usage.
- Brightness slider: With the slider you can adjust yourself how strong the screen should shine. As a rule, you can leave the value at around 40%, but it is only worth increasing the brightness in strong sunlight. When set appropriately, this can significantly extend the battery life of the iPhone.
Extend iPhone battery life by disabling connections
At home you can surf the internet safely via WiFi with your iPhone - but on the go, such radio connections shorten the runtime of the cell phone, especially when there is no connection. Because then the iPhone continuously searches for known networks, if Bluetooth is activated, also for headsets and other devices.
- Deactivate WLAN with the switch under "Settings" - "WLAN". Also set "Point to networks" to "Off".
- You can switch off Bluetooth under "Settings" - "Bluetooth".
- Location services allow apps to access your location at any time. This consumes a lot of energy because GPS is used for the location. Under "Settings" - "Data protection" - "Location services" you can either switch off the location completely or forbid individual apps to determine your location.
Dynamic background eats iPhone battery
- Under "Settings"> "Backgrounds & Brightness"> "Select New Background" you can choose between dynamic backgrounds and static single images. Dynamic backgrounds react to the movement of the iPhone, but eat up valuable battery energy.
iPhone: Set up automatic lock and save battery
You can set whether and when the iPhone screen turns off when not in use:
- Under "Settings"> "Display and brightness"> "Automatic lock" you can select the duration after which the display should switch off after inactivity.
- If you select a low value here, this protects the battery.
Disable background update of apps
Many apps update themselves continuously in the background. This makes sense for messengers like WhatsApp, but for some apps you can deactivate this function:
- You can deactivate the function for individual apps in the settings under "General"> "Background update".
Which apps use the most battery capacity?
In the settings under "Battery" you can check which apps have been charging the battery intensively in the past 7 days.
- Not only your user behavior has an impact, but also the apps themselves. Check whether you really need the relevant apps or can deactivate them.
The temperature affects the battery life
Did you notice a difference in the working speed of your iPhone in different seasons? This is because batteries like a certain temperature range.
$config[ads_text5] not found- According to Apple, the optimal ambient temperature for your iPhone is between 16.6 and 22 degrees. It achieves its highest possible performance in this area. If your iPhone is left in the blazing sun for a long time (at more than 35 degrees), you risk permanent damage to the battery. Temperatures below 0 degrees are also not recommended.
- Apple gives similar indications for the temperature during the charging process. Here, too, the company recommends the specified 16.6 to 22 degrees. Higher temperatures during charging can also damage the battery in the long term.
- If you charge your iPhone via a computer, it should be active. According to Apple, it is better for the life of the battery if it is charged by a device that does not remain in standby mode.
