Reduce battery consumption in the Google Maps app
The Google Maps app is known for its high battery consumption. This is partly due to the permanent location inquiries that take place in the background. In this article we give you tips on how to reduce the increased energy consumption.
Reduce battery consumption: Use map material offline
By default, "Google Maps" accesses the map material via the Internet. This not only puts a strain on your data volume, but also increases battery consumption. In the new version of Maps it is now possible to save certain sections offline. This means that you no longer need a connection to the Internet for the map material.
- To save a map section offline, click on the search field. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and select "Save map for offline use". Now adjust the area of the map and click on "Save". Alternatively, you can also enter a search term and call up the navigation area with a swipe from bottom to top.
Prevent location requests and save the battery
Google Maps and other services update your location in the background. Other apps also want to find your location. You can prevent this behavior by refusing the location requests.
- Open the sidebar in Google Maps by swiping from left to right and select "Settings" and then "Google location settings". Under "Location reports from Google" you deactivate the menu items "Location report" and "Location history".
- "Google location settings" lists all apps that want to find your location. Therefore, pay attention to your privacy and do not grant every app access to your location.
- In addition, you can change the mode of location determination in the "Google location settings". If you set the mode to "Device only", your location will only be determined if GPS is activated and not via the mobile network or WLAN. This does not burden the internet connection.
