Paste stock quotes from the Internet into Excel
A practical function in Excel is to be able to insert stock prices and thus get a clear table of the latest trends on the stock market.
Get the latest courses from the web and paste them into Excel
The share prices are retrieved from MSN Finance in this guide. Follow the link to go directly to the course search. Leave the website open in the background and start Excel first.
- After you have started Excel, click on "Data" in the upper tab. Then select the sub-item "Existing connections".
- Now the current connection data is displayed, including "MSN MoneyCentral Investor share prices". Select this item and click on "Open".
- Determine where the table should be created in Excel and click "OK".
- You will be asked to enter parameter values. Now open your browser again. Enter the course data to be queried on MSN Finance (for example "BMW" or "Thomas Cook") and confirm the search with Enter.
- Under the name of the share you will find the abbreviation of the share on the stock exchange. Select this abbreviation (for example "BMW" or "TCG") and then copy it to the clipboard.
- Now switch to Excel and enter the data in the field. Separate multiple dates with a comma (for example: TCG, BMW, ...). Then click "OK". Excel retrieves the relevant data from the Internet and then creates a table.
Get stock values updated automatically in Excel
- Click on "Data" in the tab and look for the sub-item "Update all". Select the arrow pointing down and click on "Connection properties ..." in the menu.
- A "Connection properties" window opens. Select the "Use" tab and go to the "Update control" sub-item (see picture). Check "Update every: ..." and enter a time. Confirm with "OK" and your entries will be saved.
