Set up Alexa app - how it works
If you have bought an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot or another Alexa-compatible device, you should set up the Alexa app correctly. We'll show you how it's done.
Step 1: Set up the Alexa app fundamentally
- First download the Alexa app for iOS or the Alexa app for Android.
- Start the app and log in with your Amazon account.
- You can then grant Alexa access to your contacts and set up Messenger.
- If you don't want to use Messenger, you can simply skip this step.
- You now have full access to the Alexa app and can set up all other functions.
Step 2: Set up the Alexa app completely
- If you tap the menu button at the top left, you can click through all categories here.
- The most relevant is the "Smart Home" category. Here you can add and manage devices.
- If you add devices to groups, you can control multiple devices with one command. With the "scenes" you have the possibility to start different actions of different devices with one command.
- To make full use of the devices, you must switch to the "Skills" in the main menu. Using the skills, you can add general functions such as a radio or a TV magazine to Alexa, but also install the required software for smart home devices.
- Go back to the home page, you will find the Alexa button below. If there is no Amazon Echo, Echo Dot or Fire TV nearby, you can also address Alexa using your mobile phone.
In the next practical tip we will tell you how secure Alexa is.
