Alcohol cold: what you can do about it
The most sensible way to combat alcohol cold is to sober up. So avoid regular alcohol consumption and cure yourself.
- Alternatively, you can fight the swelling in the nose with a conventional nasal spray. However, caution is advised here, excessive use of nasal spray can quickly become an addiction.
- Many people mistakenly think that sniffing alcohol is equivalent to an allergy. In contrast to an allergy, the substance histamine is not directly responsible for your cold, but the reaction of your body to the alcohol itself.
- If you have drunk alcohol, it affects your gut and stomach. The consequence: The absorption capacity of both organs increases and its mucous membranes become more susceptible to pathogens.
- The triggers of other allergies can accumulate better in the body and cause the feeling of getting sick.
- If you suffer from asthma, you are usually more susceptible to alcohol. This is because alcohol promotes blood circulation and thus widens the blood vessels in your nasal mucosa so that it swells.
- Another factor that is often responsible for swollen nasal mucosa is an overproduction of the natural product "histamine". The enzyme "diamino-oxidase" is responsible for its degradation. However, this is disturbed by alcohol.
- A cold of alcohol is actually not an infection, it just feels like a cold due to the swollen nasal mucous membranes. When the alcohol is broken down, you can breathe freely again.
