Alternatives to Adobe Flash Player - are there any?
This practical tip shows you whether and if so which alternatives to the Adobe Flash Player are available.
Are there alternatives to the Adobe Flash Player?
- There is no one-to-one alternative to the Adobe Flash Player with the same range of functions. However, the trend is currently towards HTML5, so that most of the major newer websites are no longer based on Flash content.
- So-called SVGs (scalable vector graphics) can be used to integrate two-dimensional and scalable graphics into a website. With Javascript, for example, SWF files can be converted to SVG so that they can be played back in the browser without a Flash plug-in.
- Many large platforms such as YouTube no longer rely primarily on Flash content, but on HTML5. Adobe itself announced a few years ago that it would prefer HTML5 to the further development of Flash - initially only in the mobile area.
- For Firefox users, Shumway is a replacement for the Adobe Flash Player.
