Old Kindle Fire HD: Install Google Play via root - how it works
Learn step by step how to install the Google Play Store on your Amazon Kindle Fire HD.
Play Store on Kindle Fire HD Requirements
The first requirement is that you must have rooted your Kindle Fire HD. You can find out how in our Root Guide for Kindle Fire HD.
- Rooting is explicitly your own responsibility, as all files could be lost.
- In the worst case, the device could even become unusable and the guarantee will no longer apply - but nothing should happen with our instructions.
Bring APKs to Amazon Kindle Fire HD
- Under "Settings | Device" activate the sub-item: "Allow installation of applications".
- Also install the free "Es File Explorer" from the Amazon App Shop.
- Download the Play Store APK files for Kindle Fire HD to your PC and unzip the ZIP archive.
Install APKs on Kindle Fire
- Now connect the Amazon tablet to your computer and copy the three files "GoogleServicesFramework.apk", "Gplay3.8.17.apk" and "Vending.apk" into the download folder of your Kindle.
- You will find this and the following steps illustrated in the picture gallery.
- Now open the pre-installed "Es File Explorer" on your Kindle Fire HD.
- In the left navigation bar you have to click on "Tools | Root Explorer" and allow root access.
- Then select the item "Include as R / W" at the entry "/". This gives you write access to the system partition.
- Now navigate to the download folder of your Kindle Fire HD.
- There, briefly tap on "GoogleServicesFramework.apk" and allow the installation.
- Hold the "Vending.apk" a little longer and select the "Copy" option that appears.
- Then navigate to the "/ | system | app" folder.
- Here you have to insert the APK.
Check the Vending APK
You can and should check the properties of "Vending.apk" now:
- Hold your finger on the APK for a few seconds.
- Now click on 'Properties'.
- Finally, under "Permissions", tap the "Change" option.
- Set the following values there:
- User: Read | Writing | To run
- Group: Reading | - | To run
- Other: Reading | - | To run
Then install the file with a tap of the “Vending.apk”.
How to get the Play Store up and running on your Kindle Fire HD
- Now switch to the "Apps" view on the homescreen of your Kindle Fire HD.
- Here you can start the Android app store "Google Play".
- Activate your Gmail account right away to be able to access your previously purchased apps.
- If the connection to the Google server cannot be established immediately, try the following trick: Simply restart the WLAN connection briefly, then try again. Registration usually works after three attempts at the latest.
- Now all that remains is to install the last APK in order to use the latest version of the Google Play Store.
- To do this, open the download folder again with "Es File Explorer" and install the following file: "Gplay3.8.17.apk".
- Now open the Google Play Store and enjoy your newly won, full Android freedom on the Kindle Fire HD.
- The store will automatically update to the latest version after a while.
An alternative to rooting - sideloading
Incidentally, you can also install Android apps on your Kindle Fire without rooting the device and thus losing the guarantee.
- You need APK files for this.
- These are for Android apps what Exe files are for PC: How to install Android apps with APK files without Google Play.
- Some Google features such as Google map connection or app updates will probably not work with it.
You can also use Google Chromecast on your Kindle Fire HD via sideloading.
