Instead of the Google Assistant, you can now set up Amazon Alexa as the standard assistant on Android devices. We'll show you how it's done.
Android: Set up Amazon Alexa as the default assistant
You can only use Alexa as a standard assistant on Android. Siri will never be exchangeable for Alexa on the iPhone and iPad. In order for the instructions to work, you need the latest version of the Alexa app.
- Open the "Settings" app on your smartphone and select the category "Apps" or "Apps & Notifications".
- Go to the "Standard Apps" here. Sometimes the category is hidden again in the "Settings".
- Under "Assistant & voice input" you can now not only select "Google", but also "Amazon Alexa".
- You can then use Alexa as a voice assistant instead of the Google Assistant.
Alexa on the smartphone: Not yet perfect
- If you have activated Alexa as the standard assistant, you must hold the home button pressed for a short time. The voice assistant then starts and suggests possible commands in parallel.
- Unfortunately you cannot yet activate Alexa by shouting. Functions like "Hey Google" have so far been reserved for the Google Assistant.
- Incidentally, the Google Assistant has not completely disappeared. In the search widget and on the Google Now page, you can still reach the wizard using the microphone icon.
In the next practical tip, we will tell you how secure Alexa really is.
