Android 5.0: Activate ART - how it works
With Android 5.0 L, Google is switching to the ART runtime environment. We'll show you how to activate it later.
More power and battery thanks to ART under Android 5.0
By switching to the runtime environment, Google wants to make Android more powerful.
- ART should give Android devices a significant speed boost and run apps faster. This means that fewer apps are possible on weaker devices.
- However, the higher performance should not affect the battery. Android 5.0 promises not only the higher performance, but also a longer battery life.
Activate the ART runtime environment under Android 5.0
How ART is integrated into Android 5.0 is not yet known exactly. In Android 4.4, the option can already be activated on some devices for test purposes. The option is still well hidden, but should be more accessible in Android 5.0.
- In Android 4.4, you first have to navigate down in the settings to the "Via phone" option.
- Find the "Build number" entry and tap the entry seven times to activate the developer options. Go back one menu level and select the new menu item "Developer Options".
- Select the "Set runtime" option and switch to "Use ART".
- Your Android device should now restart and reinstall all apps that now require a little more storage space under ART.
Android 5.0 introduces a kill switch feature. We explain how the feature will work under Android 5.0.
