Android 6.0: Use microSD card as internal storage - how it works
In the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow, you can also use the microSD card as internal storage. So you can save a lot of apps, videos and songs even on smartphones with small memory. In this article, we reveal where you can find the necessary settings.
Android 6.0: Use microSD card as internal storage
Before you can use your SD card as internal storage, you have to format it first. You can then save apps and private files there.
- First open the settings on your Android smartphone.
- There you switch to the "Storage" section.
- Then tap the button with the three dots and select the option "Format as internal storage". Caution: This will delete all of your data from the SD card.
- After formatting is complete, you will be asked if you want to move the internal memory to the SD card. Confirm with "Next" and wait until the process is finished. Depending on the amount of data, this can take a long time.
SD card as internal storage - you have to consider that
If you convert your microSD card into internal memory, you can use even cheap smartphones with only 8 GB or less effectively. Of course, your device also needs an SD card slot. You should also consider the following things:
- To keep your smartphone running smoothly, you should use a "Class 10" SD card. You can find the currently fastest and best maps in our leaderboard.
- Furthermore, you should no longer remove the SD card - especially not if the smartphone is still switched on.
- Also note that the microSD card is formatted encrypted. You can no longer simply connect the card to your PC and copy data.
A funny EasterEgg is even hidden in the new Android version. We'll tell you how to find that in another article.
