After a few months, the same problem occurs on many Android phones: the memory is full. Unfortunately, many smartphones no longer have a slot for memory cards. But there are still some ways to make room for your Android phone.
Memory full: First analyze the memory
If your cell phone warns you that the memory is full, it will soon become serious: you can no longer take photos, receive e-mails or install apps. Before you delete a beloved and widely used app, you should first analyze your memory:
- So that you can best tidy up your full memory, use the DiskUsage app, for example.
- Such apps show you what you use the most storage space with.
- Once you've figured out what uses the most space, you can start cleaning up and freeing up space.
Create storage space: transfer photos and videos to a PC
It is always easiest to transfer your own files to the computer. So you can keep your apps on your smartphone and do not have to limit your mobile phone enjoyment.
- Photos and videos in particular require a lot of storage space. It is a good idea to transfer old files to your computer and make room for new photos. You can see how this works in the video below this section.
- Alternatively, you can check whether you may not have taken too many photos of a scene. By tapping the shutter button quickly, many unwanted pictures are taken.
- To create even more storage space, open your download folder. Android usually has an app called "Downloads" preinstalled. Check here if you can delete old data there.
Clean up the system in a targeted and sustainable manner
If transferring and deleting videos did not take up enough storage space, you can delete old app files or other unnecessary data.
- If you do not want to search for the option manually, apps such as SD Maid - System Cleaner will help for such cleaning.
- If you have installed the app, a scan will show you how many file files and other unnecessary files you have on your device.
- In the next step you can select which data you want to remove and which not. The app does the rest alone and creates new storage space.
Delete or deactivate unused apps
Another step in cleaning up is deleting apps that are not used or used rarely.
- To do this, go to Settings and click on "Apps". Now you can see all installed apps.
- In the overview, you can sort all apps by size by clicking on the three dots at the top right and selecting the option.
- If you don't necessarily need an app, you can uninstall or deactivate it in the app info.
- Some system apps cannot be completely uninstalled and only deactivated, but you can also gain more storage space.
Use cloud storage
You also have the option of using the cloud as storage. This frees up space on your mobile phone and important data is not lost.
- For this, Google offers every Google account 15 gigabytes of free cloud storage.
- To do this, go to the pre-installed Google Photos app and allow the app to access your photos.
- Navigate to the settings via the side menu. Click on “Back up & Sync” there.
- Now you can activate the backup option and select the upload size in addition to the different folders. With the “High Quality” option, you even get unlimited free storage for your media.
- After the backup, you can then click on "Free up storage space" in the side menu and thus free up more storage space on your mobile phone.
- In addition to Google Photos, you can of course also use other cloud providers such as Dropbox or OneDrive from Microsoft and back up your photos and videos there.
Clear cache and restrict streaming apps
As a last option, you can clear the cache of the Android phone and remove user data from various apps. The cache primarily stores temporary files that you actually no longer need.
- To clear the cache of some apps, you have to go to your settings and the overview of all installed apps. Here you can select an app and then tap "Clear cache" in the settings. You can find detailed instructions on how to clear the Android cache in the separate practical tip.
- You can also check whether your music streaming app uses a lot of memory. This is mostly because you have certain songs available offline or they are still stored in the app's cache. In the settings of the streaming apps, you can usually set how much cache the app can take - reduce this share a bit in order to have more storage space available.
If you have the option of inserting an SD card into your Android phone, we will show you here how you can move your apps to the SD card to make more space.
