Android N: Set priority of notifications - how it works
Under the upcoming Android N, you can assign a priority to individual notifications and sort them in the Notification Center. In this way, important messages from your favorite apps, for example, always appear first - regardless of when you actually received them.
Android N: Enable notification priorities
The notification priorities have been newly introduced in Android N. To be able to use the feature, you have to update your smartphone or tablet to the latest version as soon as Android N is released. Here we explain how you are already using the Android 7 beta. Then you have to activate the priorities in the Android settings:
- To do this, pull the status bar down twice and keep the gear wheel pressed until it starts to turn.
- You will then receive a message that the UI tuner has been added to the settings.
- Therefore, open the Settings app and tap on the entry "System UI Tuner".
- Then select the "Other" and "Advanced notification settings" entries.
- Tap the button at the top right to activate the priorities. Below you can see an explanation of the five notification levels, which we have also summarized here:
The priority levels for notifications in Android N
- Level 0: Block and hide all notifications from the app
- Level 1: No full screen interruption, never fade in briefly, use no sound or vibration, hide on the lock screen and in the status bar and display at the bottom in the notification bar
- Level 2: No full screen interruption, never fade in briefly, no sound or vibration
- Level 3: No full screen interruption and never fade in briefly
- Level 4: No full screen interruption and always fade in briefly
- Level 5: Show notifications in the status bar at the top, allow full screen interruption and always show briefly
Android N: Set priorities for individual notifications
As soon as you have activated the notification priorities, you can set them individually for each app:
- To do this, wait until a notification of the desired app appears. Then drag them to the right in the notification center.
- Tap the gear icon that appears on the left.
- You can then set the desired priority level using the controller.
- Save your settings with "Done".
- Note: The priority function does not currently work with all apps. But this should change until the final version of Android N.
