Android: emergency broadcasts - that's the reason
Google's Android 5.0 operating system, also known as Lollipop, supports emergency broadcasts. We explain what the function brings you and where it can be used.
Emergency broadcasts - what is it?
Emergency broadcasts are a helpful idea and can even save lives. In Germany, however, this technology is not used everywhere. The principle is simple:
- You send a normal SMS from one client via base stations to another client. In the case of emergency broadcasts, however, the base station sends messages to all connected clients.
- Emergency broadcasts are actually just a special form of a cell broadcast, which contain any content up to 93 characters and send this message to all mobile radio cells nearby.
- The emergency broadcasts are used primarily in endangered areas. For example, they are used in Japan to warn of earthquakes.
- In Germany, the CB broadcasts are not used for emergencies, but location information is sometimes sent via the service.
Activate emergency broadcasts under Lollipop
Although the service is used sparingly in Germany, it cannot hurt if you activate it. It is definitely useful if you are traveling abroad.
- Open the Android settings and click on "More" in the "Wireless & networks" submenu.
- There you will find the "Emergency Broadcasts" menu item that you have to tap.
- Now you can set which emergencies you want to be warned for (see screenshot).
