Android smartphone as a bicycle bell - how it works
Bicycle bells belong to every road-safe bike. But did you know that you can also turn your Android smartphone into a functioning bell? We'll show you how it works.
Step 1: attach the Android device to the bike
So that you can warn other road users with your smartphone, the device should always be within range. Therefore, attach your cell phone directly to the steering wheel - just like a real bell.
- There are lots of special mounts for this. For example, Runtastic offers a special bike cover.
- These rubber bike mounts are a little cheaper. But they usually don't look so chic and don't hold the smartphone firmly enough.
- Alternatively, you can also look for inexpensive bike cases on Ebay or in the electronics store around the corner. You will always find good offers here.
Step 2: Turn your smartphone into a bicycle bell using the app
After your Android device is securely attached to the steering wheel, only one thing is missing: the right ringtone. The PlayStore offers a lot of apps for this:
- For example, the free "Bicycle Bell" app contains four classic ringtones.
- Also free of charge but with a larger selection of tones: the "Instant Buttons" soundboard. Simply add your favorite tones to your favorites and you will always have your bike bell ready.
- The free alternative "Bicycle Bell" even turns your smartphone optically into a bicycle bell.
- But be careful: Most Android smartphones are very quiet and therefore difficult to hear in traffic. Be sure to test the apps in a safe area before using them!
Tip: The lockscreen of your smartphone should be deactivated so that you can get the bell quickly. Read how to do this on the next page.
