Android: Activate SSL encryption
For security reasons, you should also activate SSL encryption on Android when you check your emails. Most major email providers offer this encryption automatically. We will show you how to check the settings and change them if necessary.
Enable email SSL encryption
The procedure depends on which Android app you use on your smartphone for email traffic. We will show you the example of the standard mail app from HTC smartphones.
- Go to "Settings" in the "Menu" in the email app.
- All configured email accounts are displayed here. Select the appropriate account.
- In the following menu, click on "Account Settings" to change the connection settings.
- Depending on the device type, your smartphone will now show you the connection settings. For other manufacturers, such as Samsung, you have to scroll down and click on "More Settings". You will find the settings under the menu items "Incoming server" and "Outgoing server".
- Now check whether the incoming mail server is set to SSL or SSL / TLS for encryption. If not, change it. Depending on the protocol, you may have to change the port to 995 (POP3) or 993 (SMTP) if this does not happen automatically.
- If necessary, change the encryption on the incoming mail server to SSL. The corresponding port is 465 or sometimes 587.
In another practical tip, we will tell you how to set up a firewall on Android smartphones.
