Install and set up Android Studio - how it works
Android Studio is Google's free development environment for developing Android apps. You can find out how to install and set this up in the practical tip below.
Check Java Development Kit
A prerequisite for installing Android Studio is the installation of the Java Development Kit. First check whether this is installed on your system:
- Click the Windows icon and type "cmd".
- Then enter "java -version". If no version is installed, you can immediately proceed to step 6.
- If you already have a Java version installed, you have to check whether you have only installed the runtime environment or the entire SDK. To do this, go to your Applications folder and look for the "Java" folder.
- There must be a folder in the format "jdk ...". If so, you can proceed to paragraph 2.
- If the JDK folder does not exist, you must download and install the development kit.
- Download and install the 32-bit or 64-bit version from our website. To do this, follow the installation instructions.
Download and install Android Studio
After you have checked or installed the JDK, you need to download and install Android Studio:
- First download the latest version of Android Studio from our website.
- Then follow the installation instructions to install Android Studio on your system.
Set up Android Studio
Once you've installed Android Studio, all you have to do is set it up. Finally, you can start developing your own app for Android:
- As soon as you start Android Studio, the welcome screen opens. Here you should first check your Android Studio for updates.
- To do this, click on "Check for updates now" at the bottom in the middle. (Red Arrow)
- If a newer version is available, you must click on "Update and Restart".
- To test your developed apps with the emulator integrated in Android Studio, you have to install "Intel HAXM". This software only works with an Intel processor and the x86 images must be downloaded for the emulator.
- On the welcome screen, click "Configure" and then "SDK Manager". Go to the "SDK Tools" tab and check "Inter x86 Emulator Accelerator". Finally click on "Apply".
- After the package is downloaded, you still need to install it. To do this, go to the installation folder of Android Studio and then to the directory "... \ sdk \ extras \ intel \ Hardware_Accelerated_Execution_Manager". Execute the file "installhaxm.exe" here.
- Follow the installation instructions and then restart Android Studio.
Develop app with Android Studio
Now that you have successfully installed and set up Android Studio, you can start developing your app:
- Android apps are developed in the Java programming language.
- To learn this language, the book "Java is just an island" is particularly suitable.
