Android TV: Access FTP server - how it works
If you want to exchange data between Android TV and your mobile phone or PC, you need to set up an FTP server on the device. We'll show you how.
Step 1: Download FTP server for Android TV
In this guide, we use the free FTP server app. Alternatively, you can also use other FTP apps.
- Download the FTP Server app and the ES File Explorer onto your Android smartphone. Then start the ES File Explorer.
- Navigate to the "Downloads" category. There you will find the downloaded APK file from the FTP server.
- Hold down the APK file and select "Share" from the menu. Select a cloud storage like "Google Drive" and upload the file there.
- The file will be downloaded again on the Android TV in the next step.
Step 2: install FTP client on Android TV
- Start Android TV and select the "Security & Restrictions" category in "Settings".
- Under "Unknown origin" set the option to "On".
- Open the Google Play Store under Android TV and also download the ES File Explorer here.
- You can now log in to the desired cloud storage such as Google Drive in the "Cloud" category.
- Select the APK from "FTP Server" and install it.
- If the app does not appear on the start screen, look in the "Settings" under "Apps".
Step 3: FTP server on Android TV
- If you start the FTP server under Android TV, you can directly set the desired user name, password and port here.
- You should generally select the "SD Card" as the root directory. You can then start the FTP server.
- You can start the access using the FTP client for Android, FTP client for the PC or directly in the browser.
