Android: restrict WiFi use - how it works
You can restrict the mobile data connection on Android - but when using WLAN, your hands are tied with the system tools. In this article, we reveal how you can still control exactly which apps are allowed to access the Internet via WLAN.
Limit WiFi usage on Android
You can restrict the data connections via 3G and LTE using the Settings app on your Android phone. You can get a corresponding option for the WiFi connection with the free app NetGuard.
- Install the network tool on your Android device and start it.
- After the first start, confirm the message about the VPN connection. "NetGuard" then sets up a virtual VPN connection. This means that in future all attempts to connect to the Internet via WLAN will be routed through the app and registered in this way. In this way, you can specify exactly which apps are allowed on the Internet and which are not. So the app works like a firewall.
- Then activate "NetGuard" using the switch at the top left.
- You will now find a list of all installed apps. Tap on an entry and then on the WLAN symbol to exclude the respective app from WLAN use.
- Repeat this step for all apps that should not access the WLAN in the background.
- It may take a few minutes for the firewall to work properly. It is therefore best to test whether one of the blocked apps can access the Internet - if not, "NetGuard" works correctly and you do not have to worry about a thing.
