Starter in the car is defective - this is how you can recognize faults
If the car does not start, a defective or empty battery can also be responsible. You can recognize a defective starter by two distinct features when the battery is intact and charged.
- Either the starter turns, nothing happens when you turn the ignition key. The starter reacts, but the engine cannot be started.
- A defective starter can also crack. This cracking is caused by the starter pinion. That moves, but does not work.
- You can still start the vehicle without a starter: you can push the car. You will find out what you should pay attention to in another article.
- Sometimes it helps to move the car a few centimeters and the starter works again. Nevertheless, you should drive to a workshop promptly and have the starter repaired.
What can break on a starter?
Usually a starter breaks due to wear.
- For example, the magnetic switch can hang. In this case, the main contacts cannot be switched.
- Of course, the main contacts of the magnetic switch can also be defective.
- The starter has an electric motor, which may also have a defect.
- Finally, there may be a pinion defect. If this part is worn, it can no longer grip.
A lot of things can break down in a vehicle and make repairs necessary. It is an advantage if you can at least find the source of the error. Therefore, in the next post we will show you how you can tell when the alternator is defective.
