Ixquick & Co: The anonymous Google alternatives
Not only the NSA is spying on the Internet unnoticed. Google also collects a lot of data from its users, via normal and flash cookies, but also via log files. These can only be partially removed afterwards, for example with FlashCookieView. However, if you use a data-protected alternative to the search engine giant right away, you won't even be spied on by Google:
- An alternative search engine to Google is ixquick. Search queries are encrypted here and user log data is not saved. Searches from Europe are handled exclusively on European servers, so that US authorities like the CIA, FBI and NSA - unlike on US soil - do not have to be granted access to the data. In addition to web searches, ixquick also offers image, video and even phone book searches.
- If it is important to you to actually get Google search results, Startpage is ideal. Your search query will be sent encrypted to Startpage here. This now carries out the Google search and in turn transmits the search results to you in encrypted form. Only the advertising is your own. The site not only googles for you on the web, but also supports image and video searches.
- If you are looking for Google features such as Google Books, similar images or if the translator is important, none of the Google alternatives listed above will really help. Then you should protect yourself via a VPN connection: HotspotShield VPN routes all of your internet traffic through a server that protects you from Google's curiosity.
- Another anonymous Google alternative is DuckDuckGo. We present this search engine in detail in an extra practical tip.
