Use Apple Music on Linux - Here's how
Apple Music, the streaming service from Silicon Valley, is very popular, but cannot run properly on every operating system, including Linux, since iTunes does not exist for Linux-based systems. With a few tricks you can still get it going - we'll show you how it's done.
Use Apple Music on Linux - Step 1: Install PlayOnLinux
PlayOnLinux is the more comfortable version of Wine: a program with which you can install and use Windows programs on Linux.
- Install the Synaptic Package Manager. This simplifies the administration of package files.
- Search for "PlayOnLinux" in Synaptic Package Manager.
- Press the box next to the name "playonlinux" and then click Apply.
- If the manager asks if he can install a few additional packages, confirm everything with "Yes".
- Depending on the internet connection, it takes a while because the total package is around 750 MB.
Create virtual disk under PlayOnLinux
Once PlayOnLinux is installed, you can start setting up a virtual disk immediately.
- Start PlayOnLinux and go straight to the "Tools" tab.
- Click on "Manage Wine versions" and look for the version "1.9.21" in the x86 list. Install this version.
- When the Wine version is installed, close the window again and click on "Configure".
- Click on "New" at the bottom left and select the 32 bit Windows installation.
- Select the previously installed "1.9.21" as the Wine version.
- Name the virtual disk "iTunes".
Install iTunes on PlayOnLinux
Now that you've set up a virtual disk, you can start installing iTunes.
- First, download the 32bit version of iTunes 12.5.3 from our download area.
- While downloading iTunes, go to "Configure" again and select the "iTunes" plate.
- Go to the "Wine" tab and then "Configure Wine".
- The "Applications" tab should appear. In the drop down menu below, select Windows 7. Then click "Apply".
- Next, go to "Install Components". Search for "msxml3", "dotnet20", "dotnet40" and "gdiplus" in the components and install them in the order.
- Then go to "Install a program" and select "Install an unlisted program" below.
- Go to "Edit or update an existing application" and in the next step press the "Show virtual disks" box.
- Select the "iTunes" plate and click "Next". You will be asked if you want to change anything else. Leave everything blank and click again on "Next", since you have already set everything up beforehand.
- Select "32 bit installation" and then look in your downloads for the previously downloaded iTunes version and select it.
- Then follow the steps of the iTunes installation manager and start the program from the start page of PlayOnLinux iTunes. Sign up and enjoy your music collection on Apple Music.
- Note: Unfortunately, the synchronization of your Apple devices does not work with this version of iTunes.
