Set up Apple Pay: Here's how
Would you like to set up Apple Pay? Just change your region. The mobile payment method is not yet officially supported in Germany, but you can still go shopping with your mobile phone in some supermarkets. You can use this little trick to pay at the checkout with your iPhone or Apple Watch in the future.
Setting up Apple Pay - getting started
Since Apple Pay is not yet available in Germany, you have to follow a small workaround in order to still be able to use it on your iPhone or Apple Watch. You only need to change the country settings for a short time. This will no longer be necessary as soon as the service is officially available in Germany.
- Open the settings on your iPhone.
- Navigate to "General> Language & Region".
- Now tap on "[device name] language" and select, for example, English. Under "Region" you can choose, for example, the United Kingdom or Ireland.
Create a virtual credit card and set up Apple Pay
Now you can download an iTunes app to create a virtual credit card. The "boon" app is recognized in most regions as a participating credit institution for Apple Pay.
- Open the App Store and install boon on your iPhone.
- Open the app and create an account. Use your real data and first choose the free basic tariff. With this you can spend a maximum of 250 euros per month via Apple Pay.
- Now top up your virtual credit card. You can pay by credit card or bank transfer. If you choose the transfer as payment method, you have to expect a few days processing time.
- Now set up Apple Pay: Open Wallet.
- Touch the plus icon at the top.
- Then select Boon and enter your details.
- Now the account only has to be verified. Your identity verification can take a few days.
- If you see your Boon virtual credit card in your wallet, you can change the language and region back to Germany.
