Apple Pay, Apple's new payment method, is basically not that new anymore, it was introduced in 2014. How Apple Pay works can be found in this practical tip.
Pay with Apple Pay: how it works
Some things still take a long time to reach us. With Apple Pay, it took four years. Apple Pay was presented in September 2014 at the press event for the iPhone 6. After that, the payment service was initially only available in America, but that has now changed: Apple Pay has also been available in Germany since the end of 2018.
- To pay with Apple Pay, you need at least an iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6 Plus. Alternatively, use an Apple Watch to pay. A prerequisite for this, however, is a link to an iPhone 5 or newer.
- When it comes to security, Apple relies on the Near Field Communication radio standard and the Passbook app. In addition, each time you make a payment with a fingerprint on the iPhone, you must legitimize yourself for the financing transaction.
- In practice, this means that you press your finger on the fingerprint sensor while holding your iPhone to the corresponding card reader in the store. Instead of the fingerprint, you also have the option to authorize yourself using face recognition.
- According to Apple, you don't have to worry about data protection. According to the technology company, data protection is very important to Apple Pay. No data of the transactions at Apple is stored which would allow conclusions to be drawn about you.
- At the moment, only customers of Deutsche Bank, Hanseatic Bank, Hypovereinsbank, Comdirect, N26, Fidor Bank, O2 Banking and Bunq can pay with Apple Pay in Germany. However, numerous other financial institutions are expected to join in the course of the year.
- With Apple Pay, you can currently pay in around 220, 000 stores in the United States. These include large chains like Bloomingdale's, Nike, Whole Foods and McDonald's. With us, the selection is not quite as big. With the icon (see picture) you can quickly see where the new payment method is already possible.
- By the way: At the forefront is FC Bayern Munich. With the traditional club, you can now pay for everything from the entrance ticket to the sausage with Apple Pay.
