Apple TV: Register remote control - how it works
Basically, you do not have to register your remote control on the Apple TV. The device automatically accepts commands from all Apple Remotes. However, if you use another remote in the same room to operate your Mac, for example, you should pair Apple TV with a specific remote control. Then the set-top box only reacts to commands from the registered remote.
Register Apple TV remote control with a key combination
- If you have a new Apple Remote made of aluminum, hold down the "Menu" button and the right button for 6 seconds (see picture).
- If you still have an old remote made of white plastic, press the "Menu" and "Forward" buttons at the same time. Hold it down for about 6 seconds as well.
Pair Apple Remote using Apple TV settings
- Open the Settings app on your Apple TV.
- Navigate to General> Remote Controls.
- Click Connect Apple Remote.
- Apple TV now searches for the remote control itself. If it is found and connected, Apple TV displays a chain icon. You can then only control Apple TV with the registered remote control.
Disconnect Apple Remote from Apple TV
If you want to operate Apple TV with different remotes again, you have to disconnect:
- Via shortcut: Use the same key combinations as in paragraph 1.
- Via the Apple TV settings: Go to "Settings"> "General"> "Remote controls" and select "Disconnect Apple Remote". If the remote control has been disconnected, a released chain symbol is displayed.
