Apple Watch 4: Create an EKG
The Apple Watch 4 is the first smartwatch with which you can create a real ECG. We show you how the electrocardiogram works and how reliable the results really are.
Instructions: Create an EKG on the Apple Watch 4
The U.S. drug agency has approved the ECG feature on Apple Watch 4. The measured data can help with early diagnosis, but does not replace a visit to the doctor. Since the technology is not yet approved in Europe, we can only use the function in Germany in 2019. There is no exact date yet.
- To use the function, you need the appropriate ECG app from Apple. The app is due to appear in the US app store in 2018.
- Start the app and put your finger on the small steering wheel of the Apple Watch, the so-called crown.
- If you hold the position for 30 seconds, the 1-lead ECG is created. You will then receive a brief evaluation of the data.
This is how the electrocardiogram works on the smartwatch
The EKG function is primarily intended for prevention. Cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation can thus be recognized early. According to Apple, the accuracy of the results is 95 percent, but a visit to the doctor does not replace the mini EKG.
- The electrocardiogram in the Apple Watch 4 works similar to large professional devices. A so-called cardiac monitor and an electrode are required.
- As with the predecessors, there is an optical pulse sensor on the back of the Apple Watch. In the latest version, this is supplemented by an electrical sensor. The electrode is in the crown.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to completely switch off your Apple Watch.
