Apple Watch vs Moto 360: comparison of smartwatches
Apple vs. Android - now also for smartwatches: We compare the top models Motorola Moto 360 and Apple Watch in this article and show which smartwatch has the edge.
Hardware - that is the design of the smartwatches
- Size: Motorola's Moto 360 comes with a round body of 45mm diameter made of metal in black and silver. The Apple Watch consists of a rectangular and somewhat thicker case with either 42 or 38mm length. These two sizes are available in polished stainless steel, anodized aluminum and 18-carat gold.
- Screen: The shape of the housing defines the screen. Motorola's Moto 360 uses a circular, almost borderless display with a diameter of almost 4 cm. In contrast, the Apple Watch comes with a conventional square screen with either 43 or 38mm diagonal.
- Bracelets: The Moto 360 is available with leather bracelets in several colors and a metal band. The Apple Watch pushes the customization further and comes in up to 38 different versions: the buyer can put together everything from the sport to the luxury smartwatch from three collections.
- Additional functions: Both smartwatches come with a variety of sensors for use as fitness trackers. While Apple prides itself on having precisely installed sensors, Motorola's Moto 360 is waterproof after all.
Software - this is how these watches become smart
- Operating system: The "Android Wear" smartwatch OS developed by Google runs on the Moto 360 and is not even adapted by the individual smartwatch manufacturers. In the typical "Material Design" from Google, clear "Cards" are displayed here, just like with Google Now on the Android smartphone. The Apple Watch comes with a system specially developed for the Smartwatch that is more colorful and innovative: For example, the homescreen now does without the typical Apple grid of icons.
- Functions: Both devices are designed as extensions of the smartphone: They display notifications, can take on simple tasks and do not let the user have to pull the smartphone out of their pockets at every opportunity. While the Moto 360 is relatively sober in its functions, you can also use the Apple Watch to send gimmicks such as scribbled messages or even your own heartbeat to friends or to your girlfriend in a romantic way.
- Operation: The Moto 360 is fully operated using swipe gestures and Google voice control. In addition to the pure touchscreen, the Apple Watch also uses a crown to turn, which is known from conventional watches. For example, you can scroll through lists without hiding the screen with your finger.
Cost point - you have to pay for new wearables
- Price: Motorola's Moto 360 costs from 249 euros, a surcharge is added for a metal bracelet. Apple's watch is available from € 350, but the price easily increases to over € 1, 000 with options such as the gold case.
- Availability: The Moto 360 will be available in Germany at least with a leather strap from the beginning of October. You have to wait a bit longer for the Apple smartwatch. It should only be available worldwide from the beginning of 2015. We have put together more detailed information for you here.
Conclusion - The ecosystem determines the choice of smartwatch
It is not yet clear which way smartwatches will be successful: the cool, information-oriented way of the Moto 360 or the colorful, customizable Apple Watch. The fact is that the watch does not replace the smartphone, but relies on an equally good performance. So the decision boils down once again to iPhone vs. Android.
