Audacity: Remove Hall - Here's how
The Audacity program lets you edit audio files in many ways. We'll show you how to remove reverb, for example.
How to remove Hall with Audacity
If you have an audio file with annoying room reverb, you can remove the reverb with Audacity. However, you should be aware that the reverb can only be removed to a limited extent, since reverb is difficult to calculate and filter. For a good result you have to try something yourself.
- First you need to install the Noise Gate plugin in Audacity. First download the plugin from the official website.
- Now unzip the archive file and place the files in the "Plugin" folder of your Audacity installation path.
- Start Audacity and import the affected audio file into the work area.
- Select the audio track and then select the "Noise Gate" effect just installed under the "Effects" tab.
- Leave the first four settings in the window that opens as they are. To reduce the reverb, you only need the "Level reduction", "Gate threshold" and "Attack Decay" controls.
- Set the "Level reduction" to "-100 DB". As a result, the recognized Hall noises are later completely filtered out.
- Under "Gate threshold" you have to experiment a lot depending on the audio file. This control ensures that all noises are cut out under the specified number of DBs. In our case, that's supposed to be the reverb.
- If the reverb in your audio file is differently loud, it is best to work in small steps and edit your audio file individually in several sections.
- With the last control "Attack / Decay" you can make fine adjustments. If your audio file sounds choppy after editing, you can use this control to set and readjust a delay.
- As soon as you are satisfied with the settings, you can simply confirm with the OK button. If you are not satisfied with the result, you can undo the change with the key combination CTRL + Z. You can then run the plugin again and adjust the settings.
