Audacity: remove network hum - how it works
In Audacity you can remove network hum from your recordings with just a few clicks. We explain how it works.
Remove network hum with Audacity
You can filter out network hum in Audacity with the Notch filter in a few steps:
- Navigate in the audio software via "Effects" to the "Notch Filter".
- Network hum is approximately a square wave with a fundamental frequency of 50 Hz. So first set a frequency of 50 Hz.
- The Q factor is the slope of the filter, which is why you can set it very high.
- Confirm with "OK" and listen to the result. You will probably have to repeat these steps for 150 Hz, 250 Hz, ..., 950 Hz.
- On the American power grid, the frequencies that you have to filter out are 60 Hz, 180 Hz, 300 Hz, ... ie 60 x (2 n + 1), where "n" is an integer.
We will explain in another practical tip how you can remove network hum with Adobe Audition.
