The Windows 7 swap file can be easily moved to another hard drive or partition. This can be useful, for example, if you want to free up space on the system partition or if you want to save the swap file on a faster hard drive.
Move the pagefile.sys swap file on Windows 7
By default, the pagefile.sys swap file is stored directly on the C: system partition. However, you can also move the file to another partition:
- Open the start menu and click on "Control Panel".
- Select "System and Security" and then "System". Then click on "Advanced system settings" (left column).
- In the "Advanced" tab, you will first find the "Performance" entry. Click on the "Settings ..." button.
- Switch to the "Advanced" tab and select the "Change ..." button in the "Virtual memory" area.
- Uncheck "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives".
- If you want to remove the swap file from drive C: first select drive "C:" in the selection field. Then select "No swap file" and click "Set". You will receive a message that Windows may not be able to record details in the event of a system error. If you agree, click "Yes".
- Alternatively, you can also leave a small swap file on the system partition. To do this, select the system partition and then click on "User-defined size". Set the "initial size" and the "maximum size" to 200 MB each. Confirm with "Set".
- Now select the drive on which you want to save the swap file in the future. Click on "System managed size" or enter a "Custom size". In both cases, confirm with "Set" and close the window with "OK". You will then be asked to restart your computer.
