Create autorun for USB stick
In this practical tip we will show you how to create an autorun file on your USB stick. The data carrier starts a program as soon as you connect it to your computer.
Start programs automatically with AutoRunnerX from USB stick
For security reasons, programs can no longer be started automatically from a USB stick using AutoRun.inf under the default settings from Windows 7. With the AutoRunnerX tool you can still command your USB stick to start a program immediately after the stick has been connected.
- Download the AutoRunnerX software from our download portal.
- Unzip the installation file by right-clicking on the ZIP file and selecting "Extract all".
- Open the extracted .exe file and follow the installation instructions.
- After installation, you can select a file or a program on the USB stick that should be started as soon as you insert the USB stick. Note that this AutoRun only works on your own computer, since the AutoRunnerX software must be available.
Create Autorun.inf for USB stick
Under Windows XP and older operating systems you can also create the "Autorun.inf" file on the USB data carrier to determine which program should start automatically when plugged in.
- To do this, first format the USB stick.
- Open the USB stick via Explorer.
- Start a text editor such as Windows' own editor.
- First save the document on the USB stick under the name "Autorun.inf".
Configure Autorun.inf on USB stick
Open the autorun file on your USB stick again with a text editor.
- Insert the line "open = example program.exe" without quotation marks. So here the program example program would be executed. The associated exe file must be on the stick for this. Portable apps like the Google Chrome Portable are suitable for this.
- If you want to see your own image instead of the usual drive symbol, add "icon = bild.ico" to the next line. The image must also be saved on the USB carrier.
- You change the name of the data carrier by adding "label = Name".
