Car keys in the fridge: Protect against car theft
Keeping your car key in the fridge may prevent car theft. We will explain why this measure is effective protection against car thieves here.
Car keys in the fridge: Protect against car theft
In order to understand the meaning of the measure, one must know the procedure of car thieves.
- Almost every car now has a remote control for opening the doors. These work via radio.
- If windows were previously broken or doors were opened, thieves can now open a vehicle more elegantly and without leaving any traces - with a special radio amplifier. You simply use the security leak of the radio car key.
- The thieves redirect radio communication between the transmitter, i.e. key, and the receiver, i.e. car door. You also increase the range of the key with antennas. This is actually a useful lifehack for your car, as you read in another post.
- All they have to do is stand next to the vehicle with an antenna. Another antenna must be placed near the key. Since a distance of eight meters is sufficient here, it is sufficient to be in front of the house if the key is somewhere on a table in the apartment.
- You can prevent this from happening by putting your car key in the fridge, more precisely in the freezer.
- The reason is simple: the freezer is a Faraday cage. This is a closed sheath made of an electrical conductor. Thus, the thieves cannot access the key's radio wave signal.
