Avast: high CPU usage - what to do?
The Avast security software is designed to ensure a virus-free computer. But what can you do if Avast is responsible for high CPU usage? We'll show you how to solve the problem.
Check CPU usage by Avast
Avast does not have to be responsible for ensuring that the CPU is fully utilized. Below we show you how you can check this.
- Open the Windows Task Manager. To do this, you can use the key combination [CTRL] + [Alt] + [Del].
- Switch to the "Processes" tab.
- To sort the list of active processes according to their workload, click on "CPU" above.
- The process shown at the top is the main cause of high CPU usage. Right-click on the entry and select "Open file path" for more information.
- There you have the option to uninstall the corresponding program. If it is actually Avast, follow the instructions below.
Avast ensures high CPU - you can do that
If you have identified Avast as the cause of the high load, you can usually fix the problem using the following steps.
- Start Avast as usual and open the program settings.
- Switch to the "Screensaver" options here.
- Uncheck the "Endless review" option. This means that the system is not checked when the screen saver is activated. Your computer is still protected.
- Note: If your computer generally has little RAM, this can also be one of the causes of the problem.
