Avira log file could not be created - what to do?
If Avira reports the error that the log file could not be created, the problem mostly lies in the access rights. We'll show you how to get the anti-virus program up and running again.
Step 1: start Avira as administrator
If you do not start Avira as administrator, the tool has no rights to save the log file in the program folder. Therefore run the program as admin:
- To do this, look for the Avira desktop icon or the associated link in the "C: \ Program Files \ Avira" folder.
- Right-click on the shortcut and select the "Run as administrator" option.
- Then run the scan again.
Step 2: Deactivate creation of the Avira log file
If you can safely do without the log file, this step can save you from a new installation.
- Double-click the Avira icon in the task bar so that the program opens.
- At the top of the menu bar, select "Tools" and there the entry "Configuration".
- Under the "PC Security" category you will find the "System Scanner" and the associated "Report".
- Deactivate the creation of a report here and save the change with "OK". Then run the scan again.
Step 3: Uninstall Avira AntiVir
If nothing has succeeded so far, you only have to uninstall and then reinstall Avira. However, you should pay attention to a few things so that the error no longer occurs.
- First download the latest version of Avira. You can always find these in our CHIP download area.
- Open the Control Panel and under "Programs" click "Uninstall a program".
- Select "Avira Free Antivirus" from the list and click on the "Uninstall" button above.
- The uninstall program then starts. Click "Next" and select the "Remove the program" option.
- If you then click "Yes" and "Next", the program is stopped and uninstalled.
- When the process is complete, you will be asked if you want to restart your computer. Confirm the query with "Yes".
- If you want to be on the safe side, you should now disconnect from the Internet because your PC is unprotected. Do not re-establish the connection until Avira is reinstalled.
Step 4: remove the remains of Avira
Since the problem may be deeper in the program, we are now really removing all the remains of Avira:
- Download the Avira RegCleaner and start the EXE file.
- Click on the "Read Keys" button and wait a short moment for the search to be completed.
- Then tick the "Select all" button and click the "Delete" button.
- Now restart the computer.
Step 5: Reinstall Avira AntiVir
- To ensure that Avira is now installed with write rights, start the installation file with administrator rights. To do this, right-click on the setup file (as in step 1) and select the "Run as administrator" option.
- Follow the further installation instructions. After the program is activated again, the problem should be finally solved.
