Avira or AVG: A comparison of virus scanners
Windows PCs attract the most malware by far. Our comparison shows you whether the virus scanners from Avira or AVG provide better protection.
Avira more thoroughly than AVG: The classic among malware killers
The normal Avira virus scanner is already available in the free version. For around 40 euros, the premium suite "Avira Internet Security" offers e-mail protection, a speed-up tool and a firewall in addition to the scanner. Since both versions are based on the same engine, there are hardly any differences in the virus scanner.
- Handling: The Avira programs are clearly structured and immediately understandable even for laypersons. Thanks to automatic updates and searches, you don't have to worry about anything. If you still want to adjust the virus protection, you will find numerous options for the system scan in the settings.
- Performance: Even if you activate the Avira Pro Suite with all its functions, the system slows down noticeably. A high CPU load can only occur during the search run.
- Detection rate: In the current chip virus scanner test, Avira set a best value for the detection rate. Hardly any of our test files slipped through the network to the security program. The best thing: false positives are almost non-existent with the virus scanner.
AVG detects less than Avira: virus scanner in the test
AVG also divides its virus scanner offer into two versions: In the free version you have to do without a firewall and an anti-spam tool. These functions can only be found in the premium version "AVG Internet Security 2015" for around 40 euros. Here, too, the test results of the two virus scanners hardly differ.
- Handling: Both AVG virus scanners score with a tidy interface that is limited to the essential functions. Even PC newbies can quickly find their way around here. Advanced users can adjust the security tool via numerous settings.
- Performance: In our virus scanner test, the AVG programs performed as well as the competition. You may notice small delays with active services.
- Detection rate: Unfortunately, the AVG virus scanners weakened with the main criterion. In the test, the detection rate was only around 98 percent. In addition, you always have to expect false alarms. After all, AVG seems to be aware of the problems: Since the latest version, there have been more frequent database updates.
Conclusion: Avira or AVG - Which virus scanner wins the comparison?
- Avira Antivirus: Our virus scanner test clearly sets Avira products apart from the competition. In particular, the detection rate is hard to beat. Here you can safely take the free or premium version.
- AVG: Due to the weak detection rate and the moderate error rate, the two AVG programs are at the bottom of our leaderboard. Operation is child's play. Avira should be the safer choice, especially for the free versions.
