Avira or Kaspersky: comparison of virus scanners
For years, several providers have been fighting for the throne in the virus scanner test. Our comparison shows whether Kaspersky or Avira is ahead.
Kaspersky Lab: virus scanner in the comparison check
Kaspersky divides its offer into two areas: For around 30 euros you get "Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2015", a virus scanner with browser protection. An additional firewall, an activity monitor and other security features await you in the "Kaspersky Internet Security" premium suite for just under 40 euros. In the test, both programs performed equally well.
- Handling: With just four buttons you can access all important functions via the Kaspersky main menu. The updates are automatic and the system scan also works on a schedule. If you want to intervene more in the malware search, you will also find numerous settings. This makes the virus scanner suitable for beginners and advanced users.
- Performance: You can wait a long time for jerks or loading times at Kaspersky. There were no delays in the test when the virus software was activated - a great result.
- Detection rate: The Kaspersky scanners also master the last point with flying colors. In the test, the programs raised the alarm for almost all viruses and Trojans. However, there was no error message in the test months.
Avira AntiVir: The red malware fighter in the test
In contrast to Kaspersky, Avira offers a free version with an extensive virus scanner and browser protection. With "Avira Internet Security" you also get a SpeedUp tool and a firewall for just under 40 euros. With the virus scanner, both tools show no differences in the test.
- Handling: Both the free and the premium version convince with a clear layout that is immediately understandable for PC newbies. As an advanced user, however, you will find numerous settings for the search and browser protection. Thanks to automatic updates and searches, you are always well protected.
- Performance: In normal operation, the Avira scanners hardly slow down your system. Only with a detailed search run can the CPU load skyrocket.
- Detection rate: In the chip virus scanner test, Avira AntiVir is in no way inferior to Kaspersky tools: The detection rate was top in all areas and the error rate close to zero. You are well protected here.
Conclusion: Avira or Kaspersky - which is better?
- Kaspersky: With dream ratings in performance and detection rate, the Kaspersky virus scanner secures first place in our test ranking. You can't expect much more from a security suite.
- Avira AntiVir: Strong, but not strong enough - the Avira products show great test results in all areas. However, it is only enough for second place. If you don't want to spend any money, "Avira AntiVir Free" is one of the best virus scanners on the market.
In addition to Avira, there are of course other free virus scanners. Our next article will show you how Avira fights Microsoft Security Essentials.
