If you want to grow avocado, simply grab the core of an avocado you have bought. With this core you can grow an avocado. How you go about it, we have summarized for you in our DIY instructions on the topic of gardening.
DIY: Grow avocado with a core in a flowerpot
Avocados are used to a warm climate from their native South America. So the plant is only suitable for your garden in the spring and summer months. Otherwise the tree of avocado should get a nice and warm place in your apartment.
- Buy a ripe and strong avocado in the market. After you have prepared these, pick up the core of the avocado. Another article will tell you whether you can eat raw avocado.
- Clean the core with a soft cloth under running water. Remove all remaining pulp from the avocado. So the core can not become moldy and offers decay little attack surface. Then dry the core with kitchen paper.
- Now a sufficiently large flower pot is required. The diameter should be over ten centimeters.
- Fill the pot with soil, then put the core in it. The core may only be half covered with potting soil. Its more pointed end should protrude from the earth. You must not cover this part of the core with earth.
- The earth should now be kept well moist. The best thing is to get a small greenhouse for your room, you can get it at affordable prices. This way you keep a moist and rather warm climate around your planted avocado core. A temperature in the small greenhouse of 24 degrees upwards allows the core to take its first, delicate roots after a few months of good care.
- Alternatively, you can put a thin, damp cloth over the core or moisten it again and again. It is important that the earth is moist all the time.
- In summer you can put the little avocado tree in the garden.
Growing avocado: Instructions in a glass of water
Another method is to grow an avocado in a glass of water.
- First clean the avocado core again as described in the first section. You can also find out from us whether the avocado core is toxic when consumed.
- Now insert three toothpicks around the center of the core into the sides of the core. With this method, too, the tip side of the core must face upwards. Be careful when doing this. The toothpicks should not be too deep in the core.
- Fill a glass to the brim with water. Place the avocado core in it so that the toothpicks rest on the edge of the glass and keep the core half over water.
- Place the water glass with the avocado core on a sunny window sill and regularly refill water if necessary.
- It takes a few weeks for the kernel to take root and show its first leaves. Then you can put the avocado in a flowerpot. In summer, the avocado can then go back into nature.
