Calculate Bachelor's grade - calculate university grade average with Excel
With Excel you can calculate your Bachelor's grade and the current university grade point average. We will show you how to create a corresponding table and how to use it to calculate the grade point average.
Calculate Bachelor's degree - how it works
In the Bachelor's and Master's degrees, grades are weighted by the European Credit Transfer System points (ECTS). Therefore, you cannot simply add all the notes and divide by the number of notes. To calculate your grade point average, do the following:
- Multiply the grade of each subject by the respective ECTS points.
- Add all the products together (i.e. the results from step 1).
- Now calculate the sum of all ECTS.
- If you divide the sum of step 2 with the sum of step 3, you will get your current grade point average.
- Notes: In some courses you can delete grades, in others certain subjects are weighted several times. You must find this information in your study or examination regulations.
Calculate university grade point average with Excel
Right at the beginning of your studies, you can create a list of grades with Excel that automatically outputs the current pattern. We explain exactly how to proceed in the following steps:
- Create a four-column table in Excel: Enter the names of the courses in the first column, all grades in the second column and the associated ECTS points in the third column. In this example, we assume that you start directly in the first row and the first column.
- Now write the formula "= B1 * C1" in the fourth column of the first line. Copy this formula and paste it into every field of the fourth column. Excel automatically transforms the formula to the respective lines.
- At the bottom of the table, in the third column, create the sum of all ECTS - this should amount to 180 ECTS for a Bachelor's degree, provided there are no points for an internship or similar. subtracted from. Write under the last ECTS entry "= total (C1: Cx)". Replace the "x" with the last line that appears in your table - for 23 subjects, for example, "C23" (see screenshot).
- Repeat step three in the fourth column. This enables you to calculate the sum of the weighted notes.
- Finally, enter the formula "= D23 / C23" in the fifth column of the same line. The result gives you the current grade point average or, in the case of a complete list of grades, your Bachelor's grade.
