Many types of fruit, including bananas, are also very popular with dogs. However, as with us humans, not everything that dogs like to eat is always healthy for them.
Bananas for dogs - the right dose is important
Bananas contain a lot of health-promoting ingredients that are healthy not only for us, but also for our dogs.
- However, the prerequisite is that the bananas are added to the feed with a sense of proportion. Too much of the sweet fruit has an unpleasant impact on dog health.
- Bananas contain some vitamins, especially vitamin B6 and vitamin C. While vitamin C is important for the immune system, vitamin B6 makes a significant contribution to strong nerves.
- The fruit also contains essential amino acids, fiber, minerals and trace elements. This includes folic acid as well as zinc, magnesium, calcium, copper and potassium.
- The comparatively high potassium content of the banana can also be dangerous for dogs. If the pet eats too much of the fruit, it can lead to massive heart problems for the dog.
- It's no secret that the banana is also a great source of energy, which athletes also like to use as a natural doping agent. In addition to a high proportion of fructose, the Mediterranean fruit also contains a lot of glucose.
This is how bananas affect dog health
If you feed the bananas carefully, the fruits have a health-promoting effect on the dog's organism. As is often the case in life, however, the following also applies to bananas: everything has two sides - by no means only the two ends of the banana.
- The high proportion of fruit and glucose, for example, can have a strengthening effect on a sporty or sick dog.
- However, too much sugar hits, and this also applies to fructose, quickly on the figure. And not only that: if the dog consumes too much fructose, this leads to severe liver damage in the long run.
- The enzymes contained in the banana have a soothing effect on inflammation of the gastric mucosa and help with digestive problems.
- Bananas have a stuffing effect. If your dog has diarrhea, a little banana porridge can help get a grip on the problem. In addition, the enzymes contained in the fruit have a soothing effect on the irritated intestine. By the way, carrots also have a positive impact on the intestinal flora of the dog.
- On the other hand, if the dog has a healthy digestion, too many bananas quickly lead to the four-legged friend suffering from constipation.
Bananas for the dog - you have to be aware of that
Very important : the dog may only eat very ripe bananas. You can easily recognize the fruit by the dark yellow skin, which is often already spotted brown.
- If the banana still has a green or light yellow skin, it is not suitable for the dog. On the contrary: unripe or spoiled fruit can cause serious damage to the health of the pet.
- The best way for the dog's organism to utilize the active ingredients of bananas is to mix the mashed fruit with the feed.
- Most dogs like to eat a small portion of curd cheese or homemade yogurt with mashed banana.
- How much the dog gets from the fruit depends on the size, stature and of course the joy of moving your four-legged friend.
- However, even large dogs should not get half a banana more than about three times a week. Accordingly, very small dogs only receive the fruit in slices.
