Store banana properly - how it works
If you keep a few things in mind when storing bananas, the fruit stays fresh longer. We will show you how to properly store bananas. We'll also tell you a simple trick to make the fruit last longer.
Store bananas at room temperature
Bananas don't like it cold when stored.
- The refrigerator is not the right place to keep bananas. This also applies to hot summer days. Due to the cold, the banana peels turn black faster.
- It is best to keep bananas at room temperature and away from other fruits.
- The reason for this is that bananas let other fruit ripen faster. This is due to the fact that bananas are harvested unripe and green.
- The fruits only ripen in a ripening chamber by adding the gas ethene. This gas is still present in the banana peel and also allows fruit and vegetables nearby to ripen faster.
- By the way, apples are free of ethylene. It is also a substance that in the opposite case accelerates the ripening of bananas.
- So if you want to let unripe bananas ripen faster, place a red apple next to them.
- If you want to avoid brown spots on bananas, do not store the fruit in the fruit basket. It's best to hang them up. The trade offers practical banana holders for this.
Dark-skinned bananas are not spoiled
If the peel of the banana is darkly colored, the fruit will no longer look as appetizing.
- However, the fruits are by no means spoiled. On the contrary: A banana is actually only ripe when the skin is slightly brown.
- The darker the skin, the sweeter the fruit. So you can easily eat very dark bananas, even if the flesh is usually very soft.
- If you are disturbed by the dark color or the softer pulp, just use the fruit to mix a delicious smoothie yourself.
- Tip: Bananas stay fresh longer if you wrap the stems with cling film. This slows down the ripening process of the fruit.
