If the battery in a device has leaked, you should properly clean the contacts before inserting a new battery. In this guide, we show you what you should consider.
Before cleaning the contacts when the battery has leaked: this is how the phenomenon arises
If a battery is in a device for several months or even years and is not used there regularly, it will run out.
- Potassium carbonate and quite harmless electrolytes leak from the battery. Wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning or contact with the battery.
- To prevent your batteries from leaking in the future, you should avoid direct contact with water or heat.
- If you are not going to use the device for a long time, remove the batteries or tape the contacts.
Clean contacts when battery is leaking
Even if a leaked battery is relatively harmless, you should wear gloves for your own protection.
- If there is rough contamination, you can remove the largest parts with your finger or an old toothbrush.
- Alcohol or a special alcohol cleaner is best suited for cleaning the contacts. Vinegar also does a good job as a household budget. The use of alcohol is only worthwhile for heavier soiling.
- Dip a cotton swab in alcohol or vinegar and use it to treat the contacts. Leave it on for a short time so that the contents of the battery can be easily removed.
Prevent batteries from leaking
The caustic ammonium chloride attacks the zinc cup of the battery. This happens all the time, even when the battery is not in use.
- So it doesn't matter what you do about it, sooner or later the battery will leak.
- A battery usually lasts for at least one year. If you want to save yourself the mess, you should change batteries every 1.5 years.
- Alternatively, you can use alkaline-manganese batteries. These do not run out so quickly.
Dispose of leaking batteries properly
Leaked batteries should be disposed of in the same way as batteries that have not leaked. For safety reasons, you should pack the battery in a small bag for transport.
