Replace the battery of GameBoy games - how it works
If the battery of your GameBoy game is defective, you can replace it yourself. We'll show you exactly how to do this.
Replacing the battery of GameBoy games: the tools
- A CR 2025 battery. You can get this in a 4-pack on Ebay for around 2 euros or in electronics stores.
- A cutter knife, carpet knife or pocket knife to remove the battery, as well as small pliers.
- An old plastic ballpoint pen and a lighter to open the game. Alternatively, you can also use glue or building material glue in conjunction with the ballpoint pen.
- Some tape to fix the new battery.
Step 1: opening the GameBoy game
Since GameBoy games are locked with a special screw, you have to tinker with the opening tool yourself:
- Place the GameBoy game face down on the table so that you can access the screw.
- Now take the lower end of a disused pen. Hold the flame of the fire train against the lower opening of the pen case so that it softens.
- Then press the opening onto the screw so that the soft plastic wraps around the screw. Hold the case in this position for about a minute until the plastic hardens.
- Then you can turn the sleeve (counterclockwise) to the left and the screw can be removed. Slide the front of the game down to open the case and remove the board.
- Note: Keep a little distance while using the lighter. The fumes from the plastic should not be inhaled. Alternatively, you can also fill glue into the sleeve of the ballpoint pen.
Step 2: replace the GameBoy game battery
You will find the battery at the top right of the board. It is fixed at the top and bottom with a metal pin. The battery is soldered at two points.
- Take a cutter knife, carpet knife or pocket knife and try to loosen the upper pin first. To do this, carefully place the knife on the top or middle and try to loosen the pin with a small lever movement.
- Caution: It is best to put on gloves, as they can easily slip off. You can hold the board with your hand. If you slip off, make sure that the board is not damaged as far as possible. Don't be afraid to damage the battery, even if you stick it in with a knife, nothing will happen.
- If the upper piece is loosened, you can pull the pin further with the pliers. Now only the lower sift has to be released.
- The whole process takes about 20 minutes. Patience is required here. Take your time so that you do not injure yourself and do not damage the circuit board.
Step 3: insert and fix the battery
- If the battery is removed, the two metal pins are probably very bent. Take the pliers at hand and bend them straight again.
- A small plastic ring is placed around the old battery. Remove it and put it around the new battery. Fix the ring with some craft glue or a small piece of Tesa film.
- The smooth plus side of the new battery must be on the underside. Place the top metal pin on the battery and wrap the tesa film around the circuit board two to three times.
- In the end, the battery should be well fixed and not be able to move. If the board looks like the one on the right, you have done everything correctly.
- Reinsert the board, screw the game back on with the ballpoint pen and test the functionality in the GameBoy.
