Battleborn vs. Overwatch: a comparison
Battleborn vs. Overwatch: The online community is discussing violently, because these two shooters split the gamers into two camps. We summarize what the two games have to offer.
Battleborn vs. Overwatch: gameplay comparison
The games may look similar, but they are completely different.
- Battleborn is most likely what is known as a "MOBA shooter": you slip into the role of a hero that you would control from a bird's eye view in games like "League of Legends" or "DOTA". As is typical of the genre, there are "creeps" in Battleborn - CPU opponents - that you have to push back.
- Overwatch, on the other hand, is more of a classic shooter with the difference that you play with different heroes and not with configurable classes. There are no CPU opponents and the gameplay is similar to the shooter "Team Fortress 2".
- At Battleborn, the focus is on eliminating the CPU opponents in order to direct your own creeps to a target point. The gameplay at Overwatch is always that you have to defeat the other heroes to win the round.
- The skills your hero has are predetermined in Overwatch and cannot be changed. Heroes must be pitted against each other to gain benefits. In comparison, your Battleborn hero can be customized in the game and unlock various skills.
Battleborn vs. Overwatch: game modes compared
- Battleborn has a single player campaign and a multiplayer mode. The single player mode can be played in co-op with up to 5 people. The three different multiplayer modes play similarly to MOBAs, in which you advance creeps, defeat bosses or score target points.
- Overwatch does not have a single player mode. The focus is on the three multiplayer modes, in which you have to take target points, drive a moving "payload" or combine both game principles.
- You can only follow a story driven in the game in Battleborn. Blizzard's "Overwatch" focuses on short films and comics that you can find outside the game on the Internet.
- In Overwatch, you can only change characters in the round after death. In Battleborn, you select a character for the entire round, but you can level it up.
- At Battleborn, the maps are very extensive and partially angled. Various bonuses encourage mini-bosses to be defeated and the map to be explored far away from the front line.
- The Overwatch action mainly focuses on the front, i.e. on the corresponding target, which you attack or defend as a team. The maps are therefore smaller, but tactically more sophisticated, so that you can only reach certain points with special classes, for example.
Battleborn vs. Overwatch: art style and game flow
Both games are wrapped in a comic look, but serve different tastes.
- The Battleborn look will be familiar to many Borderlands players as the game comes from the same developers. The game world is very colorful and has particle effects and damage point displays.
- Overwatch is also colorful. Compared to Battleborn, however, it looks more subtle and harmonious. The effects of the game are reduced to hero abilities and therefore clearer than its competitor.
- In terms of game flow, Overwatch is clearly the "faster" game: the game takes advantage of the vertical, which allows battles to occur at different levels. The speed mainly results from the fact that the characters are comparatively equipped with few hit points. Tanks, too, quickly disappear from the scene when they act alone.
- The Battleborn heroes tend to be more durable. The game mechanics are designed so that the characters should survive longer in order to be able to perform various actions in the game.
Battleborn vs. Overwatch: which game to buy?
- The question of which game is "the better" cannot be answered due to the different target groups.
- Battleborn is for you if you are a MOBA fan and would like to play this genre from a first person perspective. The game is also attractive for fans of the Borderlands series.
- Overwatch has its target group more among the classic shooter fans, who can enjoy the hero mechanics. For Team Fortress 2 players, the game is also a welcome change.
- Both games are suitable for shooter beginners, since aiming, which often separates the wheat from the chaff, is not crucial for the game. Teamplay, on the other hand, is essential for survival, because playing alone - especially in Overwatch - is almost impossible and not intended.
- Even hardcore gamers shouldn't be fooled by the comic look. The games offer an easy start, but are "hard to master" and also in the eSports area.
