No sound on Skype - it could be because of that
There are a number of reasons why you may not hear sound on new messages on Skype or hear the voice of the person you are speaking to. We will show you the possible problems and how to solve them.
No sound in Skype: first steps towards self-help
Before you look at the problem with Skype, you should check the following things:
- See if the sound generally doesn't work or just doesn't work in Skype. If the problem only occurs with Skype, you will find further solutions here.
- Your conversation partner may also have muted their microphone or it may not be recognized correctly by Skype. How your conversation partner activates his microphone or your loudspeaker can be read in the next but one paragraph.
Activate speakers in Windows
You may have just muted your speaker on Windows:
- Click the speaker icon in the lower right corner of the taskbar and drag the slider to at least 30 percent.
- Also click on the blue "Mixer" link under the slider.
- In parallel, call the "Echo / Sound Test Service" via Skype, which is in your contact list.
- In the mixer you will see a separate controller for Skype, which should also be pulled up (see picture).
Enable speakers in the Skype options
- Open Skype and click on "Actions" in the top right of the menu and select the "Options".
- A new window opens in which you click on the "Audio Settings" on the left side under the menu item "General".
- Under "Loudspeaker" select the loudspeaker responsible for the sound output from the list (see picture). Many computers have several selection options here. However, usually only one works.
- Just try out all the available speakers one after the other and click on the green "Play" icon.
- When you find the speaker that is sounding a signal, drag the blue dot that you see below the list to the far right.
- If you then click on "Save", the problem is solved in most cases.
Reinstall Skype
If none of the solutions work, the problem may be with the program itself or with an incorrect file. In this case, uninstall and then reinstall Skype. You can read how the uninstallation works on your operating system in this practical tip. You can download the Skype installation file from us.
The practical tip relates to Windows 7 and Skype 6.6.
